We have reviewed the letters using flash cards, ordered them onto a clear board with plastic pockets, written them out, sang the song and, played games. The games have been really helpful for recognition and pronunciation as in all of them, the students take turns being 'the teacher.'
There are great web sites (boggles' world) that generate BINGO cards. Forget the BINGO letters across the top and just use the five by five squares. The winner is the next caller and with my help has no problem.
Another fun game we played was 'Go, Fish!' Yes, explaining the game may seem daunting but we played and people helped one another understand the rules etc. The second day, I wrote out both directions and rules and went over every word with them. They got it. In this game I had two sets of flash cards. One was upper case and the other, lower case. A 'match' was one of each. As a bonus, they had to use the Question: Do you have........?
A third game we played was based on the Concentration format where upper and lower again were a match but this time all 52 cards were placed face down and teams collaborated to turn up two cards that matched. Go, Fish is my favourite as once in a while they will hand over the wrong card, thus 'tipping' someone else off to a match later!
Two week's into our class and ten literacy learners have completed writing a book based on the alphabet. Today, they had to assemble their book and then read it to me.
